Hyundai's i10 replaces the Amica at the entry-level end of its line-up. It's just 3,565mm long and 1,595mm wide, but can carry five adults in reasonable comfort and accommodate a decent amount of luggage.
Just one engine is offered: a four-cylinder, 1.1-litre petrol unit (65bhp) that returns an excellent 56.5mpg and emits just 119g/km of carbon dioxide, a low enough output for it to qualify for the £35-a-year tax band B and exemption from the London congestion charge (as of October 2008). An automatic gearbox is optional, but this does bump up fuel consumption and emissions.
Hyundai is out to undercut its opposition with a low starting price - £6,495, to include all necessary items of equipment and a fair few creature comforts - and an attractive all-round ownership package. Like all Hyundais, the i10 comes with a comprehensive five-year, unlimited mileage warranty. Buying and running an i10 should be a hassle-free experience, if not particularly exciting.
