Good value for money, large and reasonably roomy, well-equipped; doesn't pretend to be a proper off-roader.
Bouncy, wallowy ride; less-than-sharp handling; gutless petrol engine.
Cheap and cheerful, but has no unique selling point, nor any reason to choose it over its similarly cut-price Korean rivals. Feels dated already.

GM's Daewoo outpost does build generally tough and durable cars, and there's nothing much too electronically-complex here to go wrong. The Captiva's not exactly a cutting-edge advance into unknown territory, though the GM Daewoo-developed 2.0-litre diesel engine is all-new; the 2.4 petrol comes from Holden in Australia, and should have had any bugs ironed out by now.
It seems to be solidly-built, with decent paint quality and plain but decently-finished plastic trim, though attention to detail may not have been great: cars we tested had creaky, squeaky dashboards and seats, even on relatively smooth road surfaces. These were early examples off the production line, though, so hopefully customer cars will be better.
