Genuine off-road capability, well-equipped.
Limited on-road ability, coarse 2.4, plasticky interior, fragile ride.
Refreshed, value-packed Suzuki still feels its age against more modern alternatives.

Suzuki claims it single-handedly invented the small SUV segment when the first-generation Vitara first went on sale in 1988.
That might be pushing it, but the brand certainly has been at the forefront of a class that has radically switched its priorities: instead of being a niche farmer's friend the small 4x4 needs to be a desirable fashion accessory with some off-road ability.
Today, the Grand Vitara is available in two body styles; a three- and five-door. While others have unashamedly taken an on-road bias the Suzuki remains as tough as ever with the option of a high- and low-ratio gearbox and a tougher monocoque/separate chassis-hybrid similar to the one employed in the Land Rover Discovery. It's still got its mud-plugging credentials then.
To freshen up the Grand Vitara range for 2009, Suzuki has given its small 4x4 the mildest of facelifts while revising the engine range and introducing a new 167bhp 2.4-litre petrol to spearhead the range. The 1.6, 2.0 and Volkswagen-derived 1.9-litre diesel carry over.
So it's clear Suzuki hasn't gone soft with the revised Grand Vitara, but has this toughness compromised it and, more importantly, does the small Suzuki off-roader still have what it takes to deserve a place on your 4x4 wish list?
