Hyundai has lately emerged as the budget manufacturer of choice, and not merely because as Daewoo has struggled with profitability and changes of ownership, and Skoda has edged upmarket. Recent models such as the Santa Fe 4x4, Coupe, Matrix and Getz are more than credible alternatives to more expensive rivals from the mainstream makers, but these new generation of cars do leave old stagers such as the Accent a little bit out in the cold, reminiscent of Hyundai values past.
Although this Accent was all-new in 2000, and very mildly revised at the start of 2003, it is not the sort of car on which the company will pin its future. Hence, Hyundai has slashed its planned sales by more than half, aiming to sell just 3500 a year from 2003 after achieving 8500 sales during 2002. The three-door version was dropped in January '03, when a four-door saloon was added to the line-up. That leaves the Accent as a rival to Ford's Focus and Vauxhall's Astra, with Hyundai leaving the newer, more accomplished Getz to take on the Fiesta and Corsa. It seems the Accent will be spending its dying days acting as fuss-free motoring for a few value-conscious sorts.
