Not a cheap alternative
It's not a cheap alternative, though. The Avensis 2.2 D-4D, which is available in estate, hatch or saloon guise, isn't offered in the most basic T2 trim, so the entry-level version weighs in at £18,145. That looks expensive when you consider that you'll pay less for entry-level alternatives such as VW's Passat 2.0 TDI S (£17,145) or a Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (130bhp) LX (£17,645). Still, the Avensis is reasonably well-equipped, with niceties such as air conditioning, every conceivable airbag including 'knee' 'bags and, significantly, satellite navigation with ETA (Electronic Traffic Avoidance) all standard-fit.

The Avensis 2.2 D-4D, which Toyota expects will be the best-selling model in the UK, is pretty good to drive. With that six-speed 'box and fine mid-range punch, you can hustle along B-roads with unseemly haste. The handling feels a little bit sharper than the 2.0 D-4D, too, as the front axle is stiffer and the damping force has been increased on the front shockers.

New engine will feature in upcoming Lexus IS
But come 2006, we'll get the hot-rod diesel Avensis when the 175bhp 2.2 D-4D goes on sale. The headline figures here are 0-62mph in 8.6secs and a top speed of nearly 140mph. These numbers don't really convey the experience, though - with 295lb ft of torque available between 2000 and 2600rpm, this engine delivers superb response, even if you stick it in top and leave it there. This is also Toyota's most advanced diesel engine, with so-called D-CAT (Diesel Clean Advanced Technology), which is claimed to reduce exhaust emissions to a level lower than any other modern diesel. It's also said to be well within the upcoming Euro IV emission standards. Combined fuel consumption is an outstanding 46.3mpg, too.

Toyota had a lot of catching up to do with its diesels, but with the arrival of the refined and responsive 2.2 D-4D, the gap to the Euro-competition has been significantly narrowed. Expect to see this engine under the bonnet of other Toyota models soon and, in 175bhp form, in the imminent Lexus IS saloon.
