The Ford Fiesta is 25 this month. Launched in the summer of 1976, it has been the best-selling supermini in Britain for 24 years so far, as well as one of the top three best-sellers in all categories for 20 of those years. It might never have been the most innovative or sporty car of its type, but in both new and used form, it has attracted first-time buyers, women, boy racers, young families and pensioners alike on the basis of its economy and practicality.

In fact, the Fiesta could be considered more of a democratic motor for the masses than other acclaimed pretenders to the title such as the 2CV, Beetle or Mini, as these cars simply aren't as usable or versatile on a day-to-day basis. Even first-generation models are still to be seen on our roads - durable and well up to the demands of modern traffic conditions.

After all these years, the Fiesta is still one of Britain's favourite cars: millions of us have owned a Fiesta at some point, and no doubt millions more will go on to do so. After all, 10 million Fiestas have been built so far, and an all-new model is on its way.

Here we pay tribute to a faithful favourite, in all its incarnations...
