Alfa Romeo's long-rumoured small sports coupe, known as the Junior, will be based on the underpinnings of the Mito supermini.
Due for launch by 2011, the Junior will also be related to the Lancia 'new Fulvia'.
Engines for the Junior will include the new Multiair camless 1.4-litre petrol, to give 105bhp in naturally-aspirated form and 130bhp with turbocharger. The hydraulically-activated valvetrain contributes to a power boost of around 10% from the current 1.4s, as well as aiding fuel economy and reducing emissions.
These engines, and a new automated-manual gearbox, will also be used in the Mito range; a double-clutch 'DSG' gearbox will follow in 2011.
Before the arrival of the Junior comes the Mito GTA : this is being prepared for launch at the Geneva Motor Show this spring. It will get a 230bhp version of a new '1.75-litre' four-cylinder engine (a historic designation) with variable-valve timing and direct injection, though not the Multiair technology. Its weight is to be reduced, Alfa's Q2 differential fitted, suspension stiffened and lowered, and a full body kit fitted.
Alfa Romeo is also preparing to launch the replacement for the 147 small family car, the 149, in the autumn. This will be built on a new platform, and will come in five-door form only.
