By Jonathan Miller

Updated on 20 January 2009

The United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon will visit the Gaza Strip to view first hand the devastation wrought by the Israeli assault.

With the ceasefire in its third day, Palestinian residents are returning to what's left of their homes.

Israel says it will complete the withdrawal of its troops from Gaza before Barack Obama is sworn in as president this afternoon.
