What’s the point of impeaching Donald Trump?

With the latest trial beginning tomorrow, Donald Trump stands accused of something completely unique and unimaginable: that he incited an attack on the US Capitol, an impeachable offense of historic proportions.

Impeachment in the United States is when Congress determines that the President is guilty of a crime and yet impeachment can also mean that Congress chooses to remove the President. Donald J Trump was already part of the impeachment club with Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton but now he’s in a club all of his own: the double impeached.  With the latest trial beginning tomorrow, Donald Trump stands accused of something completely unique and unimaginable: that he incited an attack on the US Capitol, an impeachable offense of historic proportions. But what’s the point – given it seems apparent that – just like with the three previous trials – the Senate will not convict and Donald Trump will not be barred from holding office in the future.
