Up close with Australia’s volunteer firefighters

To Australia now, where the national gallery in Canberra has closed until further notice to protect its priceless artworks from smoke coming from bushfires burning in New South Wales.

Cooler weather has helped to slow the progress of the fires but nearly 130 are still ablaze across the state.

Thick smoke has travelled to New Zealand, and even to South America.  Twenty-five people have died – 14 in the past week.
