Chief Correspondent

Coronavirus is now spreading at a rapid rate across the UK and officials are warning of “far worse things to come”.

With evidence that cases are now doubling every seven days, some kind of nationwide lockdown across England is now a distinct possibility – as Boris Johnson confirmed that everything was being kept under review.

By Tuesday, one in five Britons will be living under tighter restrictions, with new measures just announced for the north west, Yorkshire and the Midlands.

Latest figures show the number of new infections rose by 4,322 in the last 24 hours, while another 27 deaths were reported taking the total to 41,732.
