Thirteen prisoners in England and Wales die after contracting coronavirus

Thirteen prisoners in England and Wales have died after contracting coronavirus while in jail, the justice secretary has told MPs.

Robert Buckland was facing questions at a remote session of Parliament’s human rights committee.

289 prisoners have tested positive for the virus so far, in dozens of jails across the UK.

Campaigners are concerned that overcrowding is putting prisoners – and staff – at heightened risk.
