Lockdowns come into force across Europe as Covid-19 deaths soar

Governments across Europe are battling to stop their hospitals from being overwhelmed.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced a shutdown in Germany for all of next month.

In France, Emmanuel Macron has announced a national lockdown from Friday, declaring a sudden and “brutal brake” on virus transmission was needed.

While Belgium has warned that its intensive care beds could be full by the end of next week.
