January temperature records smashed across Europe

Chief Correspondent

Temperatures in one Polish village soared to 19 celsius on New Year’s Day – a time when it’s normally close to freezing.

Across large parts of Europe, from Latvia to the Netherlands, temperatures have hit new records for the time of year. Bilbao in Spain for example posted its hottest ever January day at 24.9 degrees.

Experts say climate change is already having a profound effect on weather patterns, producing the most severe winter heatwaves in Europe’s modern history.
