Football lawmakers shelve plans for controversial blue cards

It was an innovation intended to improve behaviour on the pitch, but the president of football’s ruling body, FIFA, has shelved it.

The introduction of blue cards to elite level football would have given referees the power to send players off for 10 minutes.

But the sport’s rulemaking panel did agree to extend trials of sin bins at grassroots level.
