Woman arrested after child found ‘abandoned’

A woman is arrested on suspicion of child neglect, after a young girl was found allegedly abandoned outside a property in Carlisle on Thursday night, police say.

The child, believed to be aged two or three, was discovered outside an address at about 11pm on Thursday night.

People living in the house did not know the woman, and alerted police to the late night disturbance. When officers arrived, the child was found in a pram.

Arrest

Police appealed for the woman to get in contact, and asked for the public to provide information as to her whereabouts.

On Friday, police confirmed that a 42-year-old woman had been arrested.

A statement said: “Police have located the mother of the little girl who was left on Warwick Road late last night.

“A 42-year-old woman from Carlisle has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and is helping police with their enquiries.

“The little girl is safe and well and is being looked after by the appropriate authorities. Police would like to thank members of the community who assisted in helping them to locate the woman.”
