The story of a veteran TV news anchor struggling with falling ratings and his bizarre approach to tackling it was Lumet’s first and most successful venture into satire.

It won four Oscars from ten nominations – though Lumet himself missed out – as he did throughout his career – despite several nominations. the Academy gave him a lifetime achievement award in 2005.

Despite the recurrent themes of his movies Lumet was always modest about his ambitions – in an interview towards the end of his life he said “I don’t think art changes anything”.
