India opposition accuses government of ‘crackdown’ as election gets under way

To the biggest elections in the world now, in India, where opposition parties say the government is using arrests and detentions to stop them campaigning – calling it a “nail in the coffin of free and fair elections”.

This week police issued a summons to a Congress Party chief minister over allegations his staff doctored a video of the interior minister.

Meanwhile, there are reports a prominent opposition figure – Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal – might be released on bail, weeks after he was imprisoned over – as yet unproven – corruption allegations. Ria Chatterjee has more from India’s capital, New Delhi.
