More than 20 million people in the US have now applied for unemployment benefits in the last month.

That staggering number reflects the massive economic dislocation which has resulted from the shutdown across the country to combat the coronavirus.

It now looks almost certain that the world’s largest economy is entering its sharpest economic contraction since the Great Depression.
