Turkey’s Erdogan admits problems with earthquake emergency response

President Erdogan has acknowledged that initially there were problems with Turkey’s emergency response and has promised to rehouse people left without homes within a year.

In his first visit to areas hit by Monday’s quakes, he urged people to ignore critics who he said were manufacturing outrage over the rescue operations. And there are reports of restrictions on social media and investigations into journalists accused of critical reporting that foments hatred.

Turkey’s main opposition party said the blame for lack of preparedness was solely the President’s responsibility.
