Turkey elections: Erdogan and party suffer shock defeats

Turkey’s president Tayyep Erdogan has said he will improve his party’s track record after it suffered significant losses in local elections, giving the opposition, and his main rival, the mayor of Istanbul, a huge boost.

It’s the AK party’s worst defeat after more than 20 years in power, with the opposition Republican People’s party making major gains in most of the main cities and in conservative areas in the centre of the country.
