Donald Trump might want his opponents to shut up, but in the Philippines they risk getting locked up.This morning President Duterte’s highest profile critic, opposition leader Leila de Lima, was arrested on drug trafficking charges after an all-night vigil at her office.

Photojournalists have been documenting President Rodrigo Duterte’s ‘war on drugs’ which has left five thousand nine hundred people dead by both police and vigilante hit-men, in just five and a half months.

He claims he rode around on a motorbike  “looking for a confrontation so I could kill”. Not the confessions of a convicted serial killer but the proud boast of the President of the Philippines.

Thousands of protesters across the Philippines have taken to the streets after the ex-dictator Ferdinand Marcos was buried in a secret military ceremony. Activists have turned their anger on President Duterte for sanctioning the burial, while his hardline war on drugs is threatening to dent his popularity.
