Sewage dumping: Government may have broken law

The environment watchdog says the Government may have broken the law over sewage dumping in England. Under the current rules, water companies are only supposed to discharge raw sewage under exceptional circumstances, like unusually heavy rain.

But the Office for Environmental Protection says Defra and the regulators may have misinterpreted the law, effectively allowing the firms to pollute England’s waterways more often.
