RCA’s Dr Livia Rezende on Rio museum fire: ‘Some collections lost are irreplaceable’

The loss is simply incalculable: 20 million artefacts, representing 200 years of Brazil’s heritage, almost all of it destroyed in a huge fire which engulfed Rio’s National Museum in a matter of hours.

Investigators are still trying to find out what caused the blaze, but museum directors are describing it as an “unbearable catastrophe”.

We spoke to Dr Livia Rezende, a research tutor at the Royal College of Art and V&A.
