Protesters call on water firms to stop dumping sewage in rivers and waterways

Home Affairs Correspondent

Hundreds of people have taken part in protests against water companies dumping raw sewage into rivers and waterways.

The first National Day of Action on Water Quality saw people demonstrating at 12 locations from Edinburgh to Newquay.

Untreated sewage is only supposed to be released into rivers under exceptional circumstances, but the Environment Agency says water companies discharged raw sewage into rivers more than 300,000 times last year.
