Cowboys are among the most iconic figures of America’s old west. What’s less well known is that, in their heyday, an estimated one in four of them were Black.

With Beyonce making history by becoming the first Black woman to top the country music charts, it’s opened up a renewed interest in African-American cowboy culture – one that photographer Ivan McClellan has lovingly documented for years.
