Inside the Welsh ambulance service: the struggle to tackle handover delays

Delays handing over patients to emergency departments is the single biggest factor behind poor 999 response times, according to the ambulance service in Wales.

In December, as winter pressures reached their peak, there were occasions when more than half of the entire Welsh ambulance fleet was out of action waiting outside hospitals.

In the second of two special reports, we’ve been filming with ambulance staff and the emergency department in Cardiff as they try to tackle the problem.
