Her all-female team risk their lives every day to deliver these meals.

No one else will help them so they’re relying on each other to survive.

Luz Elena Gallardo lives in one of the poorest neighbourhood of Peru’s capital, Lima. She lost her job when the pandemic began and knew she needed to do something so she opened a communal kitchen.

She told Channel 4 News’ Latin America correspondent Guillermo Galdos, “People are in need. I feel bad and beg God for this to go away soon.”

Latin America has overtaken Europe to become the region worst hit by coronavirus deaths around the world, but for many in Peru the economic effects may come to dwarf the country’s health crisis.
