Glenda Jackson: Actor turned Labour MP dies at 87

Glenda Jackson took acting seriously. Her fierce talent saw her claim two Oscars before the age of 40 – one in a comic film.

But then she gave it all up to become a Labour MP – and took her new role in politics equally seriously. In both careers her plain-speaking ways challenged orthodoxies.

And when her parliamentary career ended, she returned, in triumph, to the stage. Today her death aged 87 was announced.
