Some villages in Germany hit by last week’s devastating floods could be left unable to restore power and drinking water supplies for months due to the extent of the damage.

The German authorities have promised to learn lessons from the disaster, after criticism that early warning and response systems weren’t better prepared.

But the massive cleanup and the search for victims who could still be trapped is the immediate priority.
