Chile holds referendum on progressive new constitution

It’s been three years since widespread anger in Chile at the cost of living, electricity prices and inequality triggered violent public protests across the country that lasted weeks. And those demonstrations led to a promise that the constitution would be rewritten.

Today the nation is voting on whether to accept a new constitution that promises, among other things, a national healthcare system, environmental protections and more rights for indigenous people.

But it’s not clear if it will get public backing.
