One veteran who did not take part in commemorations today was Inayet Ali.
Mr Ali, who turns 100 next year, was only a teenager when he volunteered to fight for the British Indian Army.
His story is part of an exhibition in Nottingham marking the contribution of the forgotten Muslim soldiers of the World Wars.
