‘Black and brown people are pioneers of the arts, but we are disregarded and put to the side’ – Rocks actor Bukky Bakray

A new film about a teenager abandoned by her mother is winning rave reviews with its honest portrayal of friendship.

The story centres on Rocks, a schoolgirl who loves make-up and music.

But unlike most girls her age, Rocks is forced to grow up quickly when she has to look after her seven-year-old brother.

Rocks is played by first time actor Bukky Bakray who, like the other cast members, was plucked from a classroom for the role.

Kiran Moodley has been speaking to her.
