Author Tayari Jones on Trump: ‘I do not believe he represents the soul of our nation’

Trump’s America has become a battleground for racial equality, LGBT rights and most recently reproductive rights, with extreme abortion laws introduced in Ohio, Alabama, Missouri and Georgia.

We talk to the author Tayari Jones, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, whose latest novel, An American Marriage, is shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for fiction.

It explores what it is to be middle-class, African-American and living in the Deep South, and we began by asking what inspired her to write the book.
