Migrants filmed storming tail-backed lorries in Calais

A strike by French ferry workers leaves traffic exposed near camps housing people desperate to get to the UK.

Overhead footage from Calais shows large numbers of migrants attempting to exploit heavy traffic near the entrance to the Channel tunnel.

A strike by French ferry workers has led to long tailbacks around nearby migrant camps, and the footage shows migrants appearing to storm the slow-moving lorries en masse.

The industrial action is by MyFerryLink workers who fear they will lose their jobs following the sale of their ships.

On several different occasions some of the migrants appear successfully to climb onto the Kent-bound lorries, with others chasing the lorries to close the doors and avoid detection.

Heavy police presence

There is a heavy police presence in the area. The footage shows what appears to be French police repelling people using a spray.

The disruption is taking place in close proximity to several migrant camps housing people desperate to get to the UK.

The rort of Calais remains closed and it is unclear when it will reopen.
