Clive James: ‘Worrying about death is an indulgence’

The terminally ill author and broadcaster Clive James tells Billie Porter he’s “too busy watching Game of Thrones” to worry about death.

In a moving interview with Billie Porter for Channel 4 News the 75-year-old says he has “no fear” of dying and that ruminating over it would be an “indulgence”.

Mr James, who has leukaemia and emphysema, said: “I don’t mope around the house all day thinking ‘oh my god, tomorrow I’ll be dead.’ I’m too busy watching Game of Thrones.”

And if you live this long, then you have something to laugh at anyway – Clive James

The Australian has described having “lungs of dust” in his most recent work of poems entitled Sentenced To Life.

And what does he attribute to his positive attitude? “I have a merry personality, he says.

“I like to think that under it there’s a sort of dark brooding hamlet type, but the fact is that I was always laughing. I still am.”

“And if you live this long, then you have something to laugh at anyway.”
