President Barack Obama orders the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay be shut down within a year.

The new president also outlawed the use of coercion, physical abuse and water-boarding in the interrogation of terror suspects.

President Obama said he wanted to send a message to the world that while the United States intended to carry on the fight against violence and terrorism, it would now do so "in a manner that is consistent with our values and ideals".
