Brit soldier killed in Afghanistan

Updated on 08 December 2007

A British soldier involved in a major operation against the Taliban has been killed in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldier died in Musa Qala, in the Helmand Province, as troops continued their push to drive out the fundamentalist group.

The town has been in the control of the Taliban for around ten months after the breakdown of a deal between local elders and the provincial governor designed to keep the rebels out.

Under the agreement, the Taliban was to leave Musa Qala with tribal elders taking over responsibility for their own security.

The pact was respected for around 80 days but the insurgents eventually reneged and moved back in with a fresh assault.

The MoD confirmed the death of the soldier in a statement, but would not release any further details about the circumstances. Next of kin have been informed.
