UK aid planes head to Haiti
Updated on 16 January 2010
British planes loaded with aid and volunteers are on their way to Haiti, joining the immediate wave of support for the earthquake victims across the world. Andy Davies reports.
The Disasters Emergency Committee said its appeal had raised £12m so far and urged people to continue giving, so relief could be delivered as swiftly as possible.
But they will face a massive logistical challenge trying to get it to those most in need.
This report contains some distressing scenes.
Since the earthquake struck Channel 4 News has been keeping in contact with Shelane Chapman, who lives in Kent, as she waited to hear about her family in Haiti.
Shelane was concerned she had not heard from her mother, brother or two sisters in Haiti. But she has recently learnt that they are alive and well.
Shelane joined Alex Thomson from south London.
