Flood warnings for Britain

By Channel 4 News

Updated on 19 November 2009

Heavy rain and gale force winds have battered parts of Britain today and the forecast is for more of the same.

Ten millimetres of rain fell in 12 hours in some areas last night with up to 30 millimetres falling today onto the already saturated ground.

The Environment Agency say there are currently 53 flood watches in Wales, the Midlands, the North East and the North West. The same areas have 26 flood warnings and there are 5 severe flood warnings in Cumbria.

Towns in Lancashire are said to be at high risk, especially those close to the rivers Irwell and Calder.

Floods have already closed roads in Todmorden and homeowners in Chatterton and Strongstry have been warned they could be at risk but Lancashire County Council says it is prepared to deal with the storms.

A spokesman said: "We do have contingency plans in place. Lancashire County Council is working with the emergency services and relevant agencies, and we're fully prepared for this situation."

Over an 18-hour spell, 45mm has fallen on the mountains in Cumbria and another deluge is predicted, which would flood parts of the county.

Heavy rainfall has also hit Snowdonia, which will affect north and west Wales.

Conditions are not expected to be as blustery as last week when gusts of up to 100mph hit the country.

This week winds of around 55mph are predicted all over Britain but the rain is forecast to contact more problems.
