More troops for Afghanistan

The defence secretary confirms that more British troops are to be sent to southern Afghanistan.

British troops may be coming back from Iraq - but more are to be sent to southern Afghanistan.

Defence Secretary Des Browne has confirmed the decision, although he would not give any numbers. It is thought at least 1,000 may be deployed.

But a top Taliban commander has warned that this will be the deadliest year for foreign soldiers in Afghanistan since the old regime was toppled in 2001.
