By Simon Israel

Updated on 24 October 2008

One of the police marksmen who shot dead Jean Charles de Menezes breaks down in the witness stand. Simon Israel reports.

The officer, known as C12, offered his condolences to Mr de Menezes's Brazilian family at his inquest in London, but said he had to shoot him to protect the public in the midst of the terror alert in the capital at the time.

The 27-year-old was killed in July 2005 after being mistaken for a suicide bomber.
