Junior Bake Off - Series 10 Winner Revealed
Category: News ReleaseTonight, Austin was crowned the winner of Junior Bake Off 2024. Thousands of aspiring junior bakers applied, but only 16 made it into the famous tent, for the most exciting competition yet. Harry Hill was the host, while judges Ravneet Gill and Liam Charles had the tough job of finding Junior Bake Off’s best young baker.
The competition began with 16 bakers, some crumbled and others rose to the challenge, until there were just 4 remaining bakers: Austin, Deji, Lola and Ronnie, each hoping to win the coveted ‘winner of Junior Bake Off’ title. After two weeks of heats and a Finals Week, our finalist Junior Bakers entered the tent for the very last time, but it is Austin who was crowned the winner of Junior Bake Off and who took home the trophy!
Over 2 separate heats, the junior bakers faced many challenges, expressing their culinary creativity and personalities. On Day One of the first heat, Rav kicked the competition off with a tricky technical of ‘Cat Cupcakes’ and then a ‘Just One Wish’ Showstopper cake. Day two saw the bakers making Liam’s ‘Chocolate Chick Hard Boiled Egg Biscuits’ and then a ‘Bedtime Story’ Biscuit Mobile. On the third day the bakers were tasked with making Rav’s ‘Skull and Cross Scones’ and then their ‘Biggest Baddie’ in Bread, followed by Liam’s Steamed Bakewell Sponge with Almond Custard, and ‘Cheesecake for Change’. The week ended with Rav’s ‘Horseshoe Choux’ and a ‘Vegetable Tartwork’ Masterpiece Showstopper.
The second heat of bakers showed off their skills with Liam’s ‘Milkshake Cake’ and ‘One Item I Can’t Live Without’ Cake. Over the following days, they made Rav’s ‘Squashed Fly’ Biscuits and ‘The World’s Worst Invention’ Biscuit Jigsaw, Liam’s ‘Vampire Iced Fingers’ and Bread ‘Franken-pets’, Rav’s ‘Ile Flottante Floating Swans’ and ‘Dessert of Dreams’. On the last day of the heat, they made Liam’s ‘Éclair-inet’ and a 'The Choux Must Go On’ Showstopper.
The Finals Week challenges were all themed, with the bakers taking on Rav’s ‘Avo Lime Pies’ and ‘Earth 2124’ Edible Terrariums on Earth Day, Liam’s ‘Stone-Age’ Rock Cakes and ‘Most Magnificent Moment in History’ Biscuits on History Day, Rav’s ‘Tennis Balls’ and ‘Favourite Sports’ Cake on Sports Day and Liam’s ‘I Love Prue Tiramisu’ and ‘Grown-Up for the Day’ Pies on Grown-Ups Day.
In a very exciting final episode, the bakers made Rav’s ‘Piggy Sausage Roll Wreath’ for their final Technical challenge, and then ‘My Best Ever Birthday Party Cake’ for their last ever Showstopper.
The four finalists battled it out in the iconic white tent aiming to bake their way to victory. After tough Technical Challenges and incredible Showstoppers , it was Austin who managed to win the final accolade. He mixed, whisked, frosted and beat his way to becoming the ultimate winner.
On winning the coveted trophy Austin said: ‘It’s not real that I have won JBO. Just having fun in the tent and baking was like a dream come true anyway.’
His older sister Poppy-Ann said: ‘I can’t believe it! I can now say that my brother is the winner of Junior Bake Off, it is so amazing!’
Mum Georgina added ‘I can’t believe that Austin has won. This is just crazy. We are just super proud! My husband Tim and I gave Austin the advice of be you and do you, and that’s what he did and look what’s happened! We are also so proud of Poppy-Ann for supporting Austin throughout the whole process and just being the big sister there for him.
Rav said ‘We had a great bunch of finalists this year, however when it came to the Showstopper Austin delivered in terms of cake, flavour, everything!’
Liam added ‘I am a bit emotional actually…Austin was a bit shy early doors, but now he is this amazing baker. Sensational!’
Austin wrapped up with: ‘I am really proud of myself winning this really nice trophy. It’s really really heavy though!’
Here Austin talks about his experience on the show and baking at home.
‘I was really pleased when I finished the Piggy Sausage Roll knowing that would be my last ever Technical! For my Showstopper – the best birthday cake ever - I made JBO The Musical, The Cake, Starring Austin, as I love musicals. It was made of chocolate sponge and orange buttercream with mini Victoria sponges on the top.
‘I didn’t realise this was the 10th birthday of Junior Bake Off - so when Junior Bake Off was born, I was born - it’s great that JBO is 10 and I am 10 too.
‘It’s hard to choose my best moment – can I choose two? First was when I got Star Baker for the first ever time for my stone age rock cakes … finally! And my second favourite moment was when I finished my penguin cheesecake as I was really pleased with how it turned out, especially because I love penguins!
‘When I heard I was going to be in the series we were in the car driving taking my sister to football – normal thing and then we had a random call - it was a member of the production team telling my mum that it is good news and you will be happy to hear it. And next I hear that I am going to be in Junior Bake Off!
‘I think in the series I started quietly and then crept up to become Star Baker in the 12th episode [History Day theme]. One of my favourite subjects at school is history and I think I am going to like the subject even more now!
‘I loved the final judging, I was just so amazed when Rav gave my Showstopper a 10 out of 10 and Liam said it was Top Tier! Which was so good as I really wanted to impress both the Judges, especially at the Final.
‘Harry was so much fun throughout the series and I loved playing invisible tennis with him. In the last episode, Harry me and Ronnie followed Rav around the tent pretending to be judges, that was so funny, we high fived each other afterwards.
‘My fellow finalists Deji, Lola and Ronnie were great. I just wanted everyone to do well in the Final and I didn’t mind who was going to win. But I must admit I did like the outcome.
‘I almost wish I could make a time-machine and go back in time to film my reaction when they announced that I had won, and relive it. I was shocked and a little overwhelmed at the time, and I couldn’t quite take it in, it was quite an emotional moment.
‘I watched the final with my mum and dad, my sister Poppy-Ann and quite of a few of my friends, we all had a great night, and had plenty of CAKE!!!
‘I will keep the trophy on the breakfast bar so everyone who comes into the kitchen can see it.
‘Baking at home is much easier without the clock ticking and I feel that since my time in the tent my baking really has improved. It helped me with everything and taught me so many new things to bake. I have learnt even more baking skills like how to infuse things, my piping is much better than it was, and I even made puff pastry which I wouldn't have even thought about trying before. It’s challenged me with new skills and flavours in my bakes as well.’
