Channel 4’s digitally supercharged Hollyoaks continues its ratings momentum, achieving a series of major audience milestones during its landmark 30th anniversary week and reaffirming its position as one of the UK’s most dynamic and youth-focused continuing dramas.
In a standout achievement, the episode broadcast on Wednesday 22nd October, the UK’s first ever soap crossover episode, has become Hollyoaks’ best-performing episode for consolidated Individuals viewing (645k) since October 2021, and its highest consolidated share (5.8%) since February 2020.
The same special Hollyoaks/Brookside hybrid episode also delivered record-breaking digital performance, becoming the best ever Hollyoaks episode on streaming (0–7 Day O&O), reaching 522k views, surpassing all previous non-Christmas episodes.
The episode saw long-buried secrets come to light as Donny Clark (Louis Emerick) arrived on Brookside Close and was confronted by Sheila Grant (Sue Johnston) who recognised him as Mick Johnson, revealing he faked his own death.
Emotional turmoil gripped the episode back in the Hollyoaks village as Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) suffered a miscarriage, Grace Black (Tamara Wall) was declared dead, and Nancy Osborne (Jessica Fox) also collapsed in hospital. Meanwhile Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor Dawson) confronted Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard) at The Dog in the Pond pub where Tony was shot.
Returning Brookside residents included Bobby Grant (Ricky Tomlinson), Billy Corkhill (John McArdle), Timothy “Tinhead” O’Leary (Philip Olivier), Nikki Shadwick (Suzanne Collins) and Thomas “Sinbad” Sweeney (Michael Starke) and the episode paid tribute to Brookside with its iconic theme tune, making it a heartfelt homage to both shows.
Reflecting this surge, Week 43 (w/c Monday 20th October) achieved Hollyoaks’ largest consolidated Individuals share of the year, averaging 4.8%, as audiences tuned in across platforms for the anniversary event.
The special Hollyoaks Later episode broadcast the same night achieved an impressive 409k views, underscoring the strong appetite for the programme’s high-impact storytelling across digital platforms.
These achievements build on Hollyoaks’ growing momentum since its transition to a digital-first model and the streamlined schedule has sharpened creative impact and strengthened viewer engagement, particularly among 16–34s, who remain at the heart of the show’s audience.
Executive Producer Hannah Cheers continues to helm a series of powerful and socially resonant storylines, combining character-driven drama with bold, contemporary themes that resonate with viewers across linear, streaming and social platforms.
As Hollyoaks enters its fourth decade, the soap’s exceptional anniversary-week performance demonstrates the continued power of innovative storytelling and the enduring loyalty of its audience, cementing Hollyoaks as a cornerstone of Channel 4’s digital portfolio and a trailblazer in British soap drama.
Louise Donald, Channel 4 Commissioning Executive for Drama, Hollyoaks says:
“We were thrilled by the reaction to the Hollyoaks birthday episodes which saw a devasting plane crash, character deaths and even made soap history with the Hollyoaks/Brookside crossover special. Hollyoaks has been at the heart of C4’s drama for thirty years and we have no doubt it will continue to deliver explosive, bold and fearless storylines in the years to come.”
