Channel 4 has commissioned a definitive new two-part documentary series into the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors scandal, a case that shocked the country and left hundreds of families devastated.
When Humberside Police were alerted to worrying concerns about the care of the deceased at a funeral home in March 2024, no one could have anticipated the shocking discoveries that lay ahead.
Following a major police investigation, more than 300 victims were identified. Among them were families who discovered their relatives had not been cremated and that the ashes, returned to them were not those of their loved ones, turning their loss into an unimaginable nightmare.
As well as discovering 35 bodies in varying states of decomposition at the Legacy premises, detectives also uncovered ashes belonging to well over 100 people scattered across the funeral home's sites throughout Hull and the surrounding area.
With exclusive access to the police and families at the heart of the case, ‘The Body Thief’ produced by Brinkworth Productions, will immerse viewers in the police investigation and crucial custody interviews, while giving voice to the families at the heart of the case as both relatives and detectives search for answers.
Revealing the devastating human impact behind one of Britain's most shocking criminal cases, this documentary tells the story of an investigation that left experienced major crime officers in tears and families grappling with an uncertainty that continues to haunt their lives.
Anna Miralis, Senior Commissioning Editor, Channel 4 said: "The Legacy Funeral Home case is one of the most shocking and distressing stories in recent British criminal history, with hundreds of families left searching for answers. Through extraordinary access to the police investigation and the families affected, this series sheds light on the human impact behind the headlines. We are proud to be working with Brinkworth Productions on a documentary that puts those at the heart of this story front and centre, while exploring how such a profound breach of trust could happen."
Lorna-Dawn Creanor, Executive Producer at Brinkworth Productions said: “The absolute betrayal at the heart of the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors scandal is almost beyond comprehension. These two powerful programmes give a voice to the families who have been forced to endure a terrible, unimaginable ordeal, whilst taking you into the heart of the investigation and the determined dedication of the detectives who painstakingly uncovered the truth. It is our ultimate hope that the films will spark a crucial debate about this unregulated industry, ensuring a crime of this nature never happens again. We are immensely grateful to the families and the detectives who placed their trust in us to tell this story.”
The Body Thief (2x60') is commissioned for Channel 4 by Anna Miralis, Senior Commissioning Editor, Documentaries. It is produced by Brinkworth Productions, with Lorna-Dawn Creanor and Malcolm Brinkworth serving as Executive Producers.
