Channel 4 begins major transformation strategy to prioritise content investment, grow impact and secure long-term sustainability

Category: News Release

Channel 4 Chief Executive Priya Dogra today launched the first stage of the broadcaster’s long-term transformation strategy, sharing proposals for a new organisational design that will create a simpler, more focused organisation that directs a greater proportion of its revenues towards distinctive British content.

Work on Channel 4’s future strategic direction is well advanced and will be shared in the coming months. At its heart, the theme of the transformation is ‘owning our future’: reshaping how the broadcaster reaches audiences through distribution, partnerships and platforms; enabling greater investment in distinctive programmes that set Channel 4 apart; and ensuring resources are allocated to maximise long-term value, sustainability and public impact.

The first stage of the transformation focuses on creating a simpler, more efficient operating model that will allow the broadcaster to deliver these strategic goals.

Earlier this year, Channel 4 began a comprehensive review of the shape, size and structure of the organisation. The review took place against the backdrop of a rapidly changing media landscape, including evolving audience habits, increasing global competition, a challenging consumer environment and a volatile advertising market. While Channel 4 has made strong progress in growing digital revenues and reach, these trends continue to place pressure on commissioning budgets and reinforce the need for fundamental change in how the organisation operates.

As a result, Channel 4 has proposed a new organisational design, alongside more efficient ways of working, which would greatly reduce non-programming spend. Under the proposals, overall headcount will be reduced by approximately 340 roles, equivalent to 28% of Channel 4's workforce, by the end of the year.

The proposed changes focus on reducing management layers, simplifying decision-making and removing duplication to create a leaner, more efficient operating model. The broadcaster will begin a formal consultation process with affected employees in due course.

Priya Dogra, Chief Executive of Channel 4, said: "Channel 4 is a precious asset which plays a unique role in the UK. We need to secure and own our future so we can continue to make shows others won’t, reach audiences others can’t, and thrive as a distinctive and disruptive British voice for future generations.

“Today marks the first phase of our transformation, ensuring Channel 4 is the right shape and size to deliver its future strategy and focus investment in the programmes audiences love.

“The challenges we face require a fundamental transformation in how we work. I know the proposals we are announcing today will be very difficult for many colleagues and will have a significant impact across the organisation. Many talented people who have made an enormous contribution to Channel 4 will be leaving as a result.

“These decisions have not been taken lightly, but I strongly believe they are necessary to create a simpler, more focused and more sustainable Channel 4 that can invest a greater proportion of revenues into distinctive content, back British creativity and deliver impact for audiences long into the future.”

Geoff Cooper, Chair of Channel 4, said: "Channel 4 has a long history of challenging convention, backing creativity and evolving alongside audiences. That ability to adapt while remaining true to its purpose is one of its greatest strengths.

“The proposals announced today are intended to secure Channel 4's future as a trusted, independent British broadcaster. By taking action now, it can build a more sustainable and resilient organisation, maximise investment in content and strengthen its ability to deliver public value for audiences, the creative industries and the UK for the years ahead."

Further details on Channel 4’s future strategic direction and additional transformation initiatives will be shared in the coming months.
