The anti apartheid campaigner Winnie Mandela has died after a long illness at the age of 81 surrounded by her family. They said she had dedicated most of her life to the cause of the people, especially South Africa’s poor and dispossessed.

But beyond her political activism she was a deeply flawed character too: her reputation tarnished by charges of kidnap and assault. Jane Dodge reports.
