Why is UK economy performing better than expected?

The UK economy performed better than expected in January – output grew by 0.3%.

That follows other recent figures suggesting that the country might just about avoid a recession.

The Chancellor today said there “was a long way to go” but a stronger economy would give him more room to manoeuvre in his Budget next week.
