Volcano eruption kills at least 14 in Indonesia

At least 14 people have been killed and hundreds displaced from their homes after a volcano erupted on Indonesia’s Java island.

Thick columns of ash were sent soaring 40,000 feet into the sky, which one official said “turned several villages to darkness”.

Experts said the eruption at Mount Semeru in East Java was triggered by a thunderstorm and days of torrential rain which are set to continue, hampering the efforts of rescue teams who are still searching for survivors.
