The stunt, which was posted on the Vilnius City website, has attracted worldwide attention.

Having driven over the illegally parked car in a tank the mayor then shakes the owner’s hand and tells him to “park legally next time”.

Arturas Zuokas is then seen sweeping up the debris while the car is towed away.

He said: “I wanted to send a message that people with big and expensive cars can’t park wherever they feel like and ignore the rights of pedestrians and bike riders.”

The mayor, who is a keen cyclist, has been urging residents of Vilnius to get on their bikes rather than travelling by car.
